At Westerfield College, operational excellence begins with safety, trust, and exceptional care. Whether looking after a young learner attending their first two-week residential summer camp or supporting an adult student preparing for a multi-year degree at a UK university, we provide a secure, nurturing, and structured environment where every student can focus on learning, making friends, and building confidence.
Our welfare and safeguarding policies strictly adhere to British Council criteria, Department for Education (DfE) standards, and “Keeping Children Safe in Education” (KCSIE) guidelines.
Safeguarding & Protection for Junior Students (Under 18)
For parents trusting us with their children, we know that peace of mind is paramount. We operate a robust 24/7 safeguarding structure tailored to short-course summer camps, bespoke school groups, and term-time enrichment visits.
1. Safer Recruitment & Vetted Staff
- 100% Background-Checked Personnel: Every teacher, houseparent, activity leader, and operational staff member undergoes rigorous background vetting, including enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and international police clearances prior to joining us.
- Mandatory Safeguarding Training: All employees complete level-appropriate Child Protection and Safeguarding training overseen by our qualified Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
2. Residential Security & Supervision
- 24/7 On-Site Care: Junior students are supervised around the clock across all classrooms, dining halls, activities, and campus grounds.
- Strict Age & Gender Separation: Residential accommodation corridors enforce strict separation by gender and age group, supported by digital access doors and on-site Houseparents and Matrons residing in the same blocks.
- Active Night Supervision: Dedicated night duty staff carry out regular, gentle corridor sweeps and maintain master key access to respond instantly to any night-time need or emergency.
3. Clear Boundaries & Off-Site Safety
- High Staff-to-Student Ratios: During off-campus cultural visits, airport transfers, and excursions, students are escorted by staff using high staff-to-student supervision ratios.
- Controlled Free Time: Free time in town centers is age-restricted, strictly bounded, and requires students to remain in designated minimum groups with scheduled mandatory check-in points.
